XVIII. Symposium on Sleep & Breathing

2-5 August 2026, Regensburg, Germany

The Symposium on Sleep and Breathing has been held approximately every 18–24 months since many years. It brings together over 200 leading researchers in the field of sleep medicine, focusing on cutting-edge developments in both basic and clinical respiratory sleep science.

This event was sponsored as part of the Congress Initiative for the Bavarian Tourism Industry (Congresses in Bavaria – KiB).

The abstract submission deadline has been extended to April 1, 2026

Welcome Address from the Local Organising Committee

Dear Colleagues,

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the XVIII Symposium on Sleep and Breathing in Regensburg, Germany. For more than four decades, this symposium is alternating around the world and will be this year in Europe. Its essence is to offer a forum for in-depth scientific exchange and innovative thinking in the field of respiratory sleep medicine, bringing together leading experts and the next generation of researchers.

A defining feature of the Symposium on Sleep and Breathing has always been its strong focus on original scientific data from bench to bedside. The meeting thrives on concise presentations by young investigators, who share their latest basic, clinical, and translational research findings. These contributions form the scientific core of the conference and are framed by keynote lectures from internationally renowned experts, fostering critical discussion and fresh perspectives.

We are delighted to host this year’s symposium in the historic city of Regensburg, located in the heart of Bavaria. With a history spanning more than 2,000 years, Regensburg offers a unique blend of cultural heritage and vibrant modern life. Landmarks such as St. Peter’s Cathedral and the medieval Stone Bridge reflect the city’s outstanding historical significance and provide an inspiring setting for scientific exchange.

We warmly welcome you to Regensburg and look forward to an engaging and stimulating symposium.

Sincerely,

Scientific Focus

The Symposium will feature 8 distinguished keynote speakers delivering state-of-the-art lectures that will frame 10-minute oral presentations of original data by early-career investigators and leading experts. The meeting will cover basic, clinical, and translational science in respiratory sleep medicine.

Session 1: Sleep–Disordered Breathing Across the Lifespan

Extending knowledge beyond pregnancy, this session highlights how sleep-disordered breathing across reproductive transitions may predispose women to cardiometabolic disturbances and discusses implications for maternal and offspring health.

Session 2: Endotypes & Metrics beyond the Apnea–Hypopnea Index

Exploring innovative phenotyping and novel diagnostic measures that go beyond conventional indices to improve patient stratification and outcome prediction.

Session 3: Neurobiology of Sleep Disordered Breathing

This session advances understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying sleep-disordered breathing by focusing on neural and molecular pathways involved in its pathophysiology.

Session 4: Consequences of Sleep–Disordered Breathing and Unrestorative Sleep

Understanding cardiovascular, metabolic, and neurocognitive sequelae of sleep-disordered breathing and unrestorative sleep.  How  can early intervention mitigate long-term systemic effects?

Session 5: Management of Patients with Sleep Disordered Breathing

Current strategies, clinical challenges, patient adherence, and the role of digital tools in long-term management of PAP therapy.

Session 6: Endotype–Guided Precision Treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Aligning therapeutic strategies with underlying pathophysiological mechanisms to enable individualized and precision treatment of obstructive sleep apnea.

Session 7: Revisiting Central Sleep Apnea: Pathophysiology and Management

Discussing advances in understanding central sleep apnea in heart failure and implications for individualized management strategies.

Session 8: Digital Sleep Science & Signal Innovation

Leveraging digital biomarkers, artificial intelligence, and advanced signal processing to redefine diagnostics, monitoring, and long-term management of sleep disorders.
